DL E&C announced on the 20th that the Canakkale Bridge in Türkiye recently has been awarded the grand prize in the ‘Global Best Project’ contest held by the U.S. ENR (Engineering New Record), a global construction magazine.

ENR annually selects and awards the most successful construction project in each category. This year, 31 projects from 23 countries were selected out of more than 100 entries after going through the evaluation process. The Canakkale Bridge won the Global Best Project Award, beating out all competing projects in the bridge and tunnel categories. Furthermore, it won the ‘Project of the Year’, the highest honor among the global best projects in each category.

The Canakkale Bridge was constructed by DL E&C and SK ecoplant over a period of 18 months, starting from Marcy 2018. It connects the European and Asian continents with a total length of 3,563m, and is the longest suspension bridge in the world, whose bridge span, the distance between the main towers, is 2023m. The technical ranking of suspension bridge is determined by the length of bridge span. The Canakkale Bridge stands at the top of the world, surpassing the previous world’s longest suspension bridge, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan.

During the construction process, DL E&C and SK ecoplant installed the world’s tallest main tower (334m), surpassing iconic structures like the Eiffel Tower in France (320m) and Tokyo Tower in Japan (333m). The bridge also presented various cutting-edge construction methods and K-construction’s exceptional technological prowess to the world, including the use of the world’s best ultra-high-strength cables, super-sized anchorages and caissons, and specially designed airplane wing-shaped tops.

Previously, the Canakkale Bridge was also awarded the grand prize at the ‘2023 Korea Engineering Award’ ceremony held at GS Tower in Yeoksam-dong, Seoul, Korea on the 6th. The Korea Engineering Award is an event organized by the Korea Engineering Association to discover and award the best engineering project in Korea. The winners were selected through technical and overall screening after receiving submissions since last July.

In addition, the Canakkale Bridge is sweeping various awards around the world, including the European Steel Bridge Award from the European Steel Association last year, and the grand prize at the ‘Civil Structure of the Year Contest’ from the Korean Society of Civil Engineers. Especially, the European Steel Bridge Award was won, beating out 20 globally competitive projects submitted from all over Europe.

An official from DL E&C said, “We have been successfully leading large-scale projects such as the Canakkale Bridge, which has made K-construction’s technology widely known around the world. We will continue to push the envelope by means of technological leadership in the industry, and expand projects that attract the world’s attention.”
