DL E&C joins hands with Saudi SWCC for carbon neutrality.

DL E&C has joined hands with Saudi Aribia’s SWCC (Saline Water Conversion Corporation) to push ahead with carbon neutrality in desalination plants.
DL E&C announced on the 23rd at the Fairmont Hodel in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia that it had entered into ‘an MOU with SWCC on mutual cooperation for the application of SMR (Small Modular Reactor) to desalination plants’ on the 22nd (local time). The MOU signing ceremony was attended by Yoo Seong-Hoon, Strategic Planning Office at DL E&C’s Plant Business Division, and Tariq Al Ghaffari, Vice President and Research Director of SWCC.
Yoo Seong-Hoon, Strategic Planning Office at DL E&C’s Plant Business Division, gave a presentation on the topic of ‘Carbon Neutral Vision for Desalination Plants using SMR technology’ at the ‘International Desalination Conference’ hosted by SWCC on the 3rd (local time) at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
DL E&C and SWCC agreed to work together to find the optimal solution for utilizing SMRs in desalination plants. The also decided to pull together in research on clean hydrogen and ammonia production that utilize SMRs to create added value. As SMRs have the advantage in various aspects such as stability, flexibility and economic feasibility compared to other energy sources while not emitting carbon dioxide, SMRs are expected to accelerate the realization of carbon neutrality in desalination plants in the future.
SWCC is an agency under the Saudi government and the 2nd largest power generation business in Saudi Arabia. SWCC is currently operating the world’s largest seawater desalination plant. It is leading carbon reduction projects in the field of seawater desalination and power generation through its affiliated research institute using renewable energy.
DL E&C is fostering SMR, which is attracting attention as a next-generation eco-friendly power source, as a future growth engine. The Company is participating as a strategic investor in X-Energy, a leading developer of fourth generation SMRs in the United States. The Company was also invited to the ‘International Desalination Conference’ hosted by SWCC earlier this month as the only Korean Company to introduce ‘its Carbon Neutral Vision for Desalination Plant using SMR Technology’, which recognized the Company’s technology.
“SMR is a representative eco-friendly business that DL E&C is fostering as a future growth engine,” said the executive director Ryu Seong-Hoon, “We will contribute to the realization of carbon neutrality of SWCC desalination plant in combination with SMR business, and our BIM and modular plant design technology.”
Meanwhile, Cabonco, a subsidiary of DL E&C specializing in de-carbonization solutions, entered into an MOU with SWCC in January to discuss how to apply CCUS (carbon capture, utilization and storage) technology to SWCC’s power plants and desalination processes.
