Daelim Opens Gwangyang City Bypass

- Sepoong Bridge, Korea’s first curved-type cable-stayed bridge,
to establish itself as a landmark connecting Suncheon and Gwangyang

Gwangyang City’s bypass built by Daelim was opened on March 28 at 16:00, 13 years after its construction commenced in June 2006. The bypass is a new four-lane road with length of 9.28km, detouring the downtown section of Gwangyang City. With the completion of the bypass, people can come and go between Gwangyang and Suncheon by detouring the usual congested areas of downtown Gwangyang City. More than 10 minutes can be saved unlike when using National Highway 2.

A total of 4 tunnels, 13 bridges, and 3 flyovers are built on the road. Sepoong Bridge connecting Gwangyang and Suncheon is regarded as Korea’s first curved-type cable-stayed bridge.

By installing view lighting on the main towers,
the bridge is expected to draw attraction as a new symbol of Gwangyang City.

The 875m-long Sepoong Bridge is a 3-tower cable-stayed bridge composed of 3 main towers with 4 lanes. Cables to connect the main towers and road in line with the surface of the curve-shaped road had to be installed — the very first of such attempt — including the adoption of the main tower-traverse cable.

Daelim is establishing its presence in the special marine bridge market through independent technology localization of cable-stayed and suspension bridges. Especially, Daelim has distinguished itself in ultra-long bridges such as Seohae Bridge and Incheon Bridge in the cable-stayed bridge sector. Daelim has also successfully carried out many cable-stayed bridges with excellent main tower curve designs and which serve as local landmarks, including Lego Land Access Bridge and Happy City Geumgang River Bridge 2. Overseas, Daelim’s technological capabilities in the marine bridge sector have been acknowledged following Daelim’s successful completion of Sungai Brunei Bridge -- the largest cable-stayed bridge in Brunei -- and Temburong Bridge, the biggest bridge project in the history of Brunei.
