-Plans to establish a leading position in the sustainable aviation fuel market
-Requested KBR to conduct feasibillity study on sustainable aviation fuel buisness

DL E&C announced on the 13th that it has entered into an agreement with KBR (Kellogg Brown & Root), a U.S.-based company specialized in petrochemical and energy technology, to conduct a feasibility study on the business and production of sustainable aviation fuel using the ‘Alcohol to Jet’ (ATJ) technology, which converts plant-extracted ethanol into aviation fuel. The collaboration, in which KBR conducts a feasibility study, will mark the first step for both companies to increase their market share of the sustainable aviation fuel.

The aviation industry has announced a mandatory application rate for sustainable aviation fuel to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Accordingly, leading oil refineries are embarking on business development and technology R&D. TMR, a global market research company, estimates that the global market size for sustainable aviation fuel is USD186.6 million (equivalent to KRW235.5 billion) in 2021, and is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 26.2%, reaching USD402 billion (equivalent to KRW508 trillion) by 2050.

Starting with this agreement, DL E&C and KBR will combine their respective strengths and expertise to propose to the producers of sustainable aviation fuel a business development plan using ATJ technology. DL E&C will be responsible for the front-end engineering design (FEED), detailed design, procurement and construction (ECC) and commissioning of production plants. KBR will take charge of the basic design before FEED phase to provide source technology and solutions for catalyst selection and maintenance. Through this collaboration, both companies plan to offer a total solution across the entire sustainable aviation fuel industry.

Yoo Jae-Ho, the head of Plant Business Division at DL E&C said, “As the application of sustainable aviation fuel is expanding internationally, DL E&C will provide a variety of solutions in collaboration with global companies, and establish a leading position in the sustainable aviation fuel industry.”
