DL E&C applies ‘D-Silence Service’ developed for the first time in Korea.
-Preventing inter-floor noise and resolving disputes in an unconventional way, in addition to high-performance floor structure
-Clear guide to resolve concerns from the upper floors, and to reach agreement on the inter-floor noise issues between residents
-The result of evaluating actual customer satisfaction shows an average satisfaction level of nearly 80%.
“I had no way of knowing the level of inter-floor noise in my house, but the ‘D-Silence Service’ causes my children to pay attention to the alarms that sound naturally. I was stressed every day wondering if the house below would come up, but I no longer had to worry about that, thanks to this service.” (Mr. A, a resident of ‘ePyeonhansesang Yeoncheon Wellsheim’)
DL E&C announced on the 27th that it has first applied the ‘D-Silence Service’ to the complex of ‘ePyeonhansesang Yeoncheon Wellsheim’, which can prevent inter-floor noise and contribute to dispute settlement. The D-Silence Service is the inter-floor noise alarm service developed by DL E&C for the first time in Korea. This service is attracting attention in presenting to both upstairs and downstairs a new solution to the problem of inter-floor noise which has not been confirmed by objective data so far.
D-Silence Service uses sensors installed on the walls of living rooms and pantries in apartment buildings to send automatic notifications via a wall pad when vibrations above a certain level are detected. The D-Silence Service automatically sounds a ‘Caution’ alarm and a ‘Warning’ alarm, respectively, when floor vibration that generates noise above the inter-floor noise standard (39dB(A)) of apartment set by the Ministry of Environment occurs more than 3 times in 10 seconds, and more than 6 times in 10 seconds.
▣ Presented a guide to inter-floor noise to resolve concerns from upper floors and to prevent misunderstandings between residents
D-Silence Service solves the stress of inter-floor noise not only for the houses below but also for the houses above. Until now, the dichotomous perception was dominant that the upper house was the perpetrator of inter-floor noise and the lower house was the victim. However, in reality, there are many upper-floor residents who complain that they suffer from protest of lower-floor residents reacting sensitively to living noises within the normal range, or even though the noise does not come from their own house. In most disputes arising from inter-floor noise, an alternative is suggested in a manner of requesting additional attention of upper-floor resident, which further increases the stress experienced by the upper-floor residents.
This service provides a clear guide to inter-floor noise to customers who have been unaware of the level of inter-floor noise occurring in their homes. It can resolve the concerns of customers who are afraid of complaints from their neighbors even if the noise is smaller than the legal standard, and are not sure how and at what level they should pay attention to the noise. If they can clearly recognize that such noise is below the standard, they can live comfortably without worry. In other words, they only need to pay attention when inter-floor noise exceeds a certain level and an alarm sounds, while the lower-floor residents are naturally relieved from the pain of inter-floor noise.
Sensor sensitivity can be adjusted by D-Silence Service. Conflicts can be prevented with the establishment of jointly agreed-upon standards that reflect the residential characteristics of both the upper and lower houses in the system. Occasionally, when a dispute arises between an overly sensitive upper house and lower house, this Service is expected to be of great help in resolving misunderstandings on both side, comparing the presence and level of noise with the standards set by the Ministry of Environment or the average noise level within the apartment complex.
Professor Lee Sang-Hyeon at Dankook University, an expert in the field of building noise and vibration, said, “D-Silence Service is a technology developed as an innovative switch of idea beyond the traditional research on inter-floor noise focused on the floors of apartment building.” He explained, “Based on accumulated data, the Service laid the foundation for the upper house and the lower house to agree on resolution of inter-floor noise, as well as to provide a clue to solve the concerns of the upper house, which was suffering from the stress of inter-floor noise due to the lack of objective standards.”
▣ Received favorable review from customers based on top-notch technology for inter-floor noise
DL E&C has been at the forefront of developing technology to solve inter-floor noise. In 2021, DL E&C consolidated 12 patented technologies to complete the ‘D-Silent Floor’, a weight class 2 floor structure consisting of a total of 5 levels of sound insulation. During the development phase, all areas related to inter-floor noise were reviewed from scratch, including structural system, building materials and sound insulation materials. D-Silent Floor has secured noise-blocking performance at a level similar to that of low-noise operation mode of home air conditioner. It is set to be commercialized for the first time in the ‘ePyeonhansesang Geomdan Well County’ to be built in Geomdan New Town, Incheon.
DL E&C initiated to develop D-Silence Service with the industry’s highest technology for inter-floor noise and floor structure, and a deep concern: ‘If we can objectively inform objective data on inter-floor noise where individual differences exist, wouldn’t it be possible to reduce the worries and wasteful debate between upper and lower houses?
DL E&C has been collaborating with experts in structure, acoustics and IT since 2019 to research sensors for collecting data on inter-floor noise, and came up with a wall-embedded vibration sensor that can measure floor vibration. As a result, the Company analyzed the correlation between the vibration of the upper house and the noise of the lower house to increase reliability, and then derived the design and construction method for the optimal placement of sensors, using its own knowhow.
In fact, as a result of a recent survey conducted by DL E&C on residents of ‘ePyeonhansesang Yeoncheon Wellsheim’, where the D-Silence Service was first applied, 78% of respondents expressed positive response. Especially, residents with children under the age of 10 exhibited an 84% positive response. Residents said that the Service has made them pay more attention to inter-floor noise, such as wearing slippers, laying down mats and changing their walking habits.

Glossary:
dB(A) refers a unit reflecting the sensitivity of noise measurements perceived by the human ear. The noise level in a quite living room is about 40dB(A).
