Gwanghwamun Square Opens

On August 1, Gwanghwamun Square newly opened to the public as the nation’s landmark presenting the 6 century-long history of the Capital Seoul. The completion ceremony, which was held at 8 p.m., was attended by the company’s CEO Kim Jong-in, Executive Director Seok Jae-deok and other staff, Prime Minister Han Seung-soo, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, and many citizens.
Gwanghwamun Square with 557 meters in length and 34 meters in width was built in the mid 6 lanes of existing 16-lane major road, and the construction started on April 23, 2008 and lasted for 464 days before opening.
Main features of the square are “12.23 Fountain,” positioned around a statue of Korea’s greatest admiral Yi Sun-shin; “Hachi Madang,” the underground exhibition hall; 365 meter-long “Waterway of History” including the nation’s history from 1392 to 2008; miniatures of “the Streets of Six Ministries”; and “Flower Carpet.”
