The prize-winning structures chosen by judges of the 2003 Landscape Architecture Awards were announced.
The gold prize for the 12th annual competition, hosted by Seoul Metropolitan City for advances in the urban landscape, went to Sindorim Daelim Apartment Ⅳ in Guro-gu, Seoul.
Silver prizes were awarded to World Cup Park (a.k.a. Peace Park) and Hwagok Daewoo Prugio Apt; and bronze prizes were given to Achasan Community Park, Mullae Hyundai Hometown Apt and the Ecological Park in Gangseo Wetlands.
Interestingly, more apartment complexes competed in the contest this year, reflecting changes in the residential environment. Sindorim Daelim Apartment Ⅳ competed with the World Cup Park to the final stage for the best landscape architecture award.
The ecological pond at the Daelim-built apartment, among other features, was highly appreciated by the examiners’ panel. The Sindorim Daelim Apartment Ⅳ innovatively re-interpreted the concept of ecological housing, which is currently in fashion in many advanced countries, including Germany.
The Daelim apartment complex, completed in May, 2003, was the first attempt at ecological housing in Korea. The complex successfully harmonized the living environment with nature by fully utilizing its natural attributes: grass-covered pavements, an ecological park, a creek and waterfalls; and transformed thick forest into recreational facilities as opposed to a parking lot. The housing is also built with environmentally-friendly construction materials.
This innovative building is now serving as a field site that is frequented by college students specializing in urban planning and landscape architecture. The housing acquired a preliminary certification of a green building in August, 2003, from the Ministry of Environment.
