The Çanakkale Bridge in Türkiye, constructed by DL E&C and SK Ecoplant, has been selected as one of the "Top 10 Overseas Construction Projects" by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Records documenting the Çanakkale Bridge’s achievements will be showcased at the special exhibition “Beyond Memories, Towards the Future”, commemorating the USD1 trillion in cumulative overseas construction orders, which will open at the Korea Territorial Development Museum in Jung-gu, Seoul.
This exhibition was organized to retrospect the significance and driving force behind Korea’s USD1 trillion in cumulative overseas construction orders, and to highlight the contributions of the people and workers who have shared this journey. Visitors can experience the 60-year history of overseas construction – from the market pioneering era of 1965 to the Middle East boom period and the modern ear – and the historical meaning embedded within it in one place. The exhibition features the top 10 overseas construction projects selected through a public vote and expert review.
The first floor of the exhibition hall introduces the process by which the Çanakkale Bridge, the world's longest suspension bridge (total length: 3,563m), made history as the first of its kind. The suspension bridge, which connects the deck with steel wires suspended from cables connecting the main towers, is called the “Harp over the Sea” for its beautiful appearance. This colossal bridge connecting Europe and Asia was a massive project with a total cost of KRW4.2 trillion. DL E&C and SK Ecoplant won the contract in January 2017, began construction in April of the following year, and completed it after four years of construction.
The Çanakkale Bridge’s main span – the distance between its two main towers – is 2023m, the longest in the world. Extending the main span is the core of the technology in construction of suspension bridge. This record surpasses the previously perceived technical limit of 2 kilometers, demonstrating DL E&C’s world-class capabilities in constructing the specialized offshore bridges.
DL E&C has directly imported commemorative coins engraved with the Çanakkale Bridge and work uniforms worn during construction from Türkiye for this exhibition. The actual ‘wire strands’ used in the production of the main cables are also on display, offering a vivid and realistic experience. A wire strand consists of 127 ultra-high-strength steel wires (5.75mm in diameter) bundled into a hexagonal shape. A total of 144 wire strands form each of the massive main cables, the massive steel rope. A single cable can withstand a load of 100,000 tons – equivalent to the weight of 60,000 passenger cars – and boost the highest tensile strength (ability to withstand the pulling force) out of the existing cables.
An official from DL E&C commented, “The Çanakkale Bridge is meaningful as it is the world’s longest suspension bridge completed by Korea’s technology. This exhibition will offer an opportunity to look back on the history of Korea’s overseas construction, and convey a deep resonance, capturing the dedication and stories of the construction workers behind these achievements.”
