CARBONCO, a decarbonization solution firm established by DL E&C, signed an MOU for the CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and storage) business with Saudi Arabia’s SWCC (Saline Water Conversion Corporation) on January 17.

As a corporation affiliated with the Saudi government, SWCC is operating the world’s largest seawater desalination facilities. SWCC is also the second largest power producer operating numerous power plants in Saudi Arabia. Through its research institute, SWCC is leading the seawater desalination and carbon emissions reduction business in the power generation field using renewable energy.

CARBONCO and SWCC decided to cooperate for CCUS technology adoption using the carbon captured in the power plants operated by SWCC for the seawater desalination post-processing process. Both companies plan to cooperate throughout the CCUS business development, including commercial CCUS plant construction, based on commercialization review and basic design research for the CCUS technology application. They are scheduled to research jointly on various CCUS businesses, such as biological and chemical shift of carbon that can be used in Saudi Arabia, mineralization, and storage.

“SWCC is propelling the seawater desalination business using renewable energy to lead the achievement of Saudi Vision 2030. We will recycle the carbon captured from power plants for the seawater desalination post-process through cooperation with CARBONCO,” SWCC General Manager Tariq Al Ghaffari said.

According to CARBONCO Business Development Office Manager Yu Jae-hyung, CARBONCO is developing and applying CCUS technologies to various fields and is endeavoring to offer sustainable CCUS solutions. “If our CCUS technologies are applied to the seawater desalination process, it will be a customized solution for Saudi Arabia’s carbon neutrality,” he added.

SWCC invited CARBONCO in the EVOLVE 2023 Forum as the only firm among Korean companies to exchange vision and technologies with regard to Saudi’s seawater desalination business.

DL E&C established CARBONCO in August last year to expand the eco-friendly decarbonization business. As a firm in charge of the CCUS business, CARBONCO is additionally carrying out eco-friendly developer businesses including hydrogen and ammonia businesses.
