Responsible for the construction of special bridges such as Seohae Bridge and Samcheonpo Bridge for the past 17 years
- For the past four or five years, I have carried out research by visiting construction sites in countries with advanced special bridge technology such as the U.S., China, and Japan, more than ten times. At first, the company advised me that it was difficult to secure independent technology; however, I persuaded the company for more than one year and ended up with successful results.
I graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering at Hanyang University and gained a master’s degree with major in structural engineering at the same university. In 1995, I joined Daelim Industrial Co, Ltd. and have primarily done construction works for special bridges for the past 17 years, including Seohae Bridge, Samcheonpo Bridge, and Sorok Bridge.

A special bridge refers to a bridge raising an upper plate of the bridge by using a cable connected to a pylon. Unlike regular bridges, the number of piers needs to be minimized except for the pylon supporting the upper plate. As a pier interrupts massive vessels such as cargo ships or cruise ships from passing beneath the bridge, this kind of bridge maintains its function as a bridge and does not hinder logistics.
Special bridges are called the “jewel of civil engineering” as they need to mobilize the latest civil engineering technology to establish a pylon handling the cable and consider the tension and resistance to the wind for the cable in the air. Now, experts from Japan and the U.S., who taught us the technology, came to Korea to show the technology as it applied to Yi Sun-sin Bridge. It is a very rewarding moment as a civil engineer. I want to show the world our capabilities.
